Maggie 2019 Sounds the Alarm on Alderman O’Connor as Burke’s Successor as Finance Committee Chairman
Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced that Alderman Ed Burke was set to resign today as Chairman of the Committee on Finance after Ald. Burke was hit with attempted extortion charges by federal authorities on Thursday. Vice Chairman Alderman Patrick O’Connor will assume the responsibilities of the committee until City Council is able to adopt a resolution to officially confirm him to the post. However, Alderman Patrick O’Connor has a long history of public corruption himself, specifically surrounding his work as a property lawyer and his wife’s work as a real estate agent in the 40th Ward.
The below statement can be attributed to Maggie O’Keefe, Candidate for 40th Ward Alderman:
“Alderman Ed Burke's resignation as Chairman of the Committee on Finance should signal a new day in our city – but Chicago cannot truly turn the page on this debacle with Patrick O'Connor as Burke's successor. He has similar conflicts of interest as Alderman Burke due to his work as a property lawyer and he has used his position of public trust to enrich himself, his friends, and his family at the expense of the community he claims to serve.
This most recent breach of the public’s trust should serve as the momentum needed to finally ban aldermen from personally benefiting from their work as public servants. I call on the Mayor and the rest of City Council to vote to confirm new leadership in the Finance Committee as soon as possible.”
