Maggie 2019 Reacts to 40th Ward Political Organization Scandal at O’Hare Airport
City of Chicago Deputy Aviation Commissioner William Helm is a volunteer for Alderman Pat O'Connor’s 40th Ward Political Organization and passed petitions for O’Connor as recently as Election Day, November 6th. As newly reported, Mr. Helm was one of four people sued for job trading and kickbacks at O'Hare. In the lawsuit, Helm is accused of pressuring his subordinates into performing political work for O’Connor during work hours. Additionally, Alderman O'Connor has accepted nearly $50,000 in donations from O’Hare interests in 2018 alone, where he exerts an undue amount of influence after 35 years in office.
The below statement can be attributed to Maggie O’Keefe, Candidate for 40th Ward Alderman:
"It's clear this cozy political relationship benefits both Mr. Helm and Alderman O'Connor. Mr. Helm pressures his employees into political work for O'Connor - all while collecting a cushy salary of over $120,000 a year - and O'Connor continues to pad out his campaign war chest.
My mother works for minimum wage at O'Hare Airport. It's disgusting that people like Mr. Helm and Alderman O'Connor abuse their positions of public trust to enrich themselves financially and politically at the expense of airport employees, who are trying to make an honest living and provide for their families without fear of intimidation or retaliation.
The 40th Ward deserves a real public servant who serves and represents her community, not more of the same ‘Chicago Machine Boys Club’ that is out to make a profit for themselves, their families and their friends."
